Centenary of soldier's death
Harold Brinkworth, whose name appears on South Milton War Memorial, was killed in the Battle of Passchendaele 100 years ago.
A corporal in the ninth battalion of the Devonshire Regiment, he was buried where he fell at Hooge, near Ypres in Belgium. In addition to our war memorial, his name appears on the Tyne Cot Memorial near the battlefield.
Harold Brinkworth married Harriet Ellen Ingram of Sutton in All Saints' Church in 1908, and was the father of two sons. His widow subsequently married George Bowhay, of Sutton, a veteran of both the Boer War and the First World War, and, sadly, their son William was killed in Normandy shortly after D-Day in the Second World War.
