South Milton
Local History Group meets on the first Friday of every month (except
August) in the village hall at 7.30pm. Non-members are assured of a
warm welcome. We started our new year programme on
January 6 when Owen Masters gave an illustrated talk of a recent tour
he made to the wartime battlefields of northern France and Belgium. Our
next meeting will be on March 2 when Felicity Goodall, once of this
parish, will talk about her latest book, Exodus Burma.
On December 2 we
joined forces with the PCC and met in the church to hear Dr
Todd Gray talk about his new book, which includes All Saints as one
of his 50 best churches in Devon. At the November meeting members spoke of family
connections in both world wars, and gave many moving accounts.
A major ongoing
feature is the setting up of a computerised village photographic
archive using equipment purchased with grants from the parish council
and the Lottery Awards for All scheme.
We have provided
information about village landmarks for the parish map produced by the
parish council, and have researched field names, past and present,
throughout the parish.
We have also produced
a pamphlet which gives brief biographical details about the victims of
the two World Wars, whose names are commemorated on the war
memorial. (Please note that John Auger, who died in 1915, and
whose name is included in our pamphlet, is not the John Auger whose
name appears on Thurlestone war memorial. This has been revealed as a
mistake, which is regretted and will be corrected when the pamphlet is
reprinted.)
If you are interested
in finding out more about the history of the village you will be
welcomed at any of our meetings.
