South Milton Village

a small working village in the South Hams of Devon

History Group - welcome

South Milton Local History Group meets in the village hall at 7.30pm. Non-members are assured of a warm welcome.

Next meeting: February 7, 2020

Members have researched the lives and service histories of the eight men whose names appear on the village war memorial, and so far have uncovered the names of around 60 who returned from the conflict. There is no known list of the names of the men from the village who served in the war. This research is now available on this website.

We have provided information about village landmarks for a parish map produced by the parish council, and have researched field names, past and present, throughout the parish. Several exhibitions have been mounted, the most recent being as part of the village's commemoration of the centenary of the end of the First World War.

A major ongoing feature is the setting up of a village photographic archive using IT equipment purchased with grants from the parish council and the Lottery Awards for All scheme.

If you are interested in finding out more about the history of the village you will be welcomed at any of our meetings.
