Women's Institute

South Milton WI meets on the third Thursday of the month at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.  We are affiliated to the Devon Federation of Women’s Institutes and are able to take advantage of any events organised by them, as well as the items organised by our own group. Added to our monthly meetings are outings, and community events.

We also have two book groups and opportunities for members to meet women from other branches in our area for craft workshops.

We are always happy to welcome new members and we would be pleased to meet you if you would like to come along to a meeting to see if it’s right for you. Holiday visitors are also welcome.

Our appeal for clothes and specific food items to help the refugees, especially those on the Greek islands and in Syria, is ongoing and thank you all so much for your support so far.  Knitted squares are being put together to make cheerful warm blankets to send out.  For details of what is being collected, there is a list in the Village Hall porch, on the table above the collection box or contact Ann Collyer for more information.

Our March 15 meeting will be a bit special and different. The talk is entitled ‘It’s what she would have wanted’ and is to be given by Claire and Rupert Callender of the Green Funeral Company.  Their literature states: ‘A good funeral is for the living but about the dead – and honours both. It stands at the core of what it means to be human.’  It gives pause for thought when we consider what constitutes a traditional funeral today, based as it is on Victorian ideas: black suits, funeral directors in top hats, even plumed black horses sometimes. Of course, this is what we may want, and that’s fine.  But it doesn’t have to be like this. So why not come along and hear about other possibilities, and what others may choose.  This will be an open meeting, all welcome, Men, too.

On April 19 we have our annual meeting with a shared supper. We will also choose the resolution, which we hope will become the national one to go forward to Parliament.
