Bowlers start a second team
South
Milton have two teams in the South Hams Short Mat Bowls League
this season. The Sanders are the newly-formed
second team and they opened their division three fixtures away to Stoke
Fleming by gaining two points, and then beat early leaders Strete at
home to gain six more. In their third match they ran Brentonians very
close at South Brent and came away with two points, but then lost all
six away to Ivybridge and at Stokenham. To round off the first half of
the season, the Sanders went down 24-25 to Slapton Swans, who have
established a strong lead in the division.
The second half of the seasnon began with a home defeat against Stoke
Fleming, two points being a poor return after earlier promise of six.
The first team won
their opening
division one match at home to Dittisham, but lost heavily at
Wembury before recovering to beat Kingston convincingly and go top of
the league. Unfortunately, this position did not last long, and another
two losses, against Milky Bar Kids at Dartington, and
defending champions Milk Churns at home, sent Milton
back into the pack. Two defeats at Dartington in cup matches, plus a
league reverse at top-of-the-table Slapton ended a a difficult November
for the first team. However, December began well with a six-point
maximum at South Brent, and a draw against Totnes Creameries in a cup
competition.
The new year has started promisingly for the first team with eight
points from a maximum 12 against Dittisham and Wembury, which has put
them into fourth place in division one. At Kingston, usually an unhappy
hunting ground, they only picked up one point, and slid two places in
the table.
The club meet every
Tuesday evening in the village hall between 7.30 and 10pm, and
newcomers, beginners or experts, are very welcome to attend. Call
Graham Collyer on 01548 560932 for details.
