The club completed
their title-winning season in division two of the South Hams League on a high note when winning 17-26 at
Loddiswell in a nail-biting finish. The scores were
level on both mats after 14 ends, and then South Milton picked up two
shots on mat one to ensure an overall victory. It also denied promotion
to Loddiswell, who needed all six points from the match. So South Brent,
who had won at Loddiswell by a similar score the previous week, go up
to division one South Milton.
The match details were: Ken Luscombe, Ivy Yeabsley, Evelyn Grant, Eric
Fitch won 14-12; David Goddard, Richard Rogers, Graham Collyer, Charlie
Dunton lost 13-14.
In the Tens competition we
were beaten in the final by the favourites Gold Tops (Totnes). We won
the triples game, but the other three disciplines were lost although in
each we put up stern opposition. Results: Charlie Dunton lost 8-11 in
the singles; Bob Breese and Graham Collyer lost 6-12 in the pairs; David
Goddard, Eric Fitch and Ken Luscombe won 10-7 in the triples; Evelyn
Grant, Richard Rogers, Ivy Yeabsley and Brian Luscombe lost 5-13 in the
fours.
In the semi-final, we beat Stokenham by the narrowest of margins.
Both legs finished all-square, and we got the verdict by an overall
shots score of 74 to 73. In the first leg, at Stokenham, we won the
pairs (Bob Breese and Graham Collyer) and the fours (Evelyn Grant,
Richard Rogers, Ivy Yeabsley, Brian Luscombe), and at home Charlie
Dunton won the singles and David Goddard, Daphne Osmond and Ken Luscombe
the triples. In a tense finale Stokenham won the fours to square the
tie, but South Milton took the final end by a whisker to claim the vital
deciding shot.
The club meet every
Tuesday evening in the village hall between 7.30 and 10pm, and newcomers, beginners or experts, are very welcome to attend.
At the annual meeting the
formation of a second team was discussed. If this interests you give
